A crack in the earth forms, parting angular edges from granular matter, each unit stacked on top of another. Each particle of solid material shifts its weight left or right, down, and always inward. They balance on top of each other and form this crack from an undisrupted tendency to clump. Conversely, I could interfere. I could take a shovel, plant it in the earth, and enact that same chain of events at a scale proportional to the strength that my bicep can lift upwards and release downwards.
